At OrthoDIRECT, our goal is to provide prompt, high-quality orthopedic care when you need it most. While we do our best to see every patient as quickly as possible, there may be times when we reach capacity. During these busy periods, wait times may be longer than usual, and we may need to prioritize patients based on the urgency of their condition. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to care for everyone as efficiently and safely as possible.

As I am planning for my retirement from my practice of orthopedic surgery and hand surgery, my first priority is to let you, my patients, know that I will be retiring May 15, 2025. I am grateful for the trust you have placed in me for your medical care, and for having the opportunity to share in your challenges and successes over the last 38 years. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work alongside an exceptional team of physicians and staff—first at Orthopaedic Associates and, more recently, at University Orthopedics.
Although I will be leaving, Dr. Matt Akelman will be stepping into this role and will begin seeing patients at our Cranston and Cumberland offices in October 2025. Dr. Akelman is well trained in hand surgery, joining us from Duke University, where he is completing his hand surgery fellowship. In the interim, other members of the University Orthopedics Hand Surgery Department are available to assist with any hand and upper extremity issues. To schedule an appointment, or to request a copy of your medical records, please call (401)799-5002
During this transition, I will miss the daily interactions with you as patients, but I am excited to embark on this next chapter ahead. My best wishes for your continued health in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Gregory Austin, M.D.
