Specialties:

Richard Scheid Limbird M.D., is one of the original members of the University Orthopedic Group. He completed his residency in orthopedics at Brown University and a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Harvard working at the Massachusetts General and New England Baptist Hospital.

Dr. Limbird specializes in hip and knee surgery which includes joint preservation and replacement procedures for correction of deformity and instability of the hip and knee. Although the most common reason for arthroplasty surgery is for arthritis, other causes can be fractures and growth abnormalities. His practice includes a large experience in revision surgery of the hip and knee. Significant experience has been attained in the treatment of periprosthetic fractures and prosthetic joint infections.

Minimally invasive surgery on the hip has been a major interest of Dr. Limbird using the direct anterior approach. His experience with this approach and using the HANA table is in excess of 5 years. This is truly a muscle sparing procedure that has been utilized by hip surgeons internationally with a low complication rate and excellent outcomes. In most cases patients demonstrate less pain, shorter recovery, and resumption of normal activity without the limitations of conventional hip surgery. Accuracy is improved utilizing intraoperative xray. Link ATHAC.org. for additional information.

Dr. Limbird has been involved in the biomechanical testing of implants for fixation and their failure. He has designed and modified surgical instruments to improve their efficiency and safety.

After completing 2 years of medical residency Dr Limbird worked for the Indian Health Service in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He worked in a hospital as the chief of medicine and the field health officer. It was this experience that led him to specialize in orthopedics. During college and medical school he was self employed as a carpenter and continues to design, build and make furniture. He is a fund raiser for Save the Bay, American Lung Association, and the American Diabetes Association.
